11 districts declared as drought-hit




Aug 16, Kolkata: The state government today declared 11 districts as drought-hit and allocated Rs 50 crore to distribute among the affected people.
State finance minister Asim Dasgupta, after attending a high-level meeting, said the situation caused by the insufficient rainfall and state would soon communicate with union agricultural minister Sharad Pawar in this regard. State would also appeal
to the Centre to study the situation.
He also apprehend that there are severe damage of the kharif crop in several districts following 30 percent rainfall.
State government however ruled out any food scarcity in the affected districts. The dought-hit districts are Purulia, Bankura, Murshidabad, Birbhum, Burdwan (known as the rice-bowl of West Bengal), Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, West Midnapore, Nadia and Malda.
